Robotic Surgery System is now at the Hospitals of our University

The robotic surgery system “Da Vinci”, donated to the Hospitals of our university by Demiryaka Holding, made its debut. The first operation with the new system will be performed on Monday. This device, which can perform operations in a wide variety of branches such as cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, especially urology and gynecology, will now serve at Erciyes University after 6 metropolitan cities in Türkiye.

The installation of this computer and software-based device managed by a surgeon was made at our university after Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Erzurum and Kocaeli.

We’re Excited! The First Operation with the New System is on Monday…

Prof. Dr. Fatih Horozoğlu, Chief Physician of the Medical Faculty Hospitals of Erciyes University, said that they were proud to break new ground as Erciyes University Medical Faculty Hospitals and were very excited about the first surgery to be performed on Monday.

He gave information about the robotic surgery system “Da Vinci” and stated that the device came to Türkiye in 2005 and was put into use, but it started to be widely used with the introduction of two new versions in 2014 and 2017. Many surgeries, especially urology and gynecology, can be performed with this device, which has been used around the world since 1999 and the first version of which came to Türkiye in 2005. Highly complicated surgeries in a wide variety of branches such as cardiovascular surgery and thoracic surgery can be performed with this robotic surgery system.

Professor Horozoğlu drew attention to the fact that surgeries could now be performed with much less risk of bleeding and in a much shorter time with this device, which allows easier access to tissues that are difficult to reach by hand and minimizes the difficulties that the human hand experiences in reaching various points of the body.

The device, which allows surgeons to perform these surgeries remotely but in a much more comfortable way with robotic arms without touching the patient directly with the help of a console, also provides patients with advantages such as a short-term rehabilitation and being able to return to their normal lives in a short time.

Especially prostate surgery, bladder cancer, kidney tumor, colon cancer, gynecological cancer surgeries, a wide variety of valve surgeries related to cardiovascular surgery, and even various eye surgeries in the field of ophthalmology can be performed with this robotic surgery system.

Emphasizing that a certain training must be completed in order to use the device, Professor Horozoğlu stated that surgeons could use the device only after completing this training process.

The First Surgery is in the Field of Urology!

Pointing out that all the complicated surgeries that have been performed commonly at our university for years could be performed with this device, Professor Horozoğlu said that the urology department would use this device intensively in the first place, and that they would start in this field at the first stage.

“Developments in medicine continue at lightning speed”

Evaluating the recent developments in the field of medicine, Prof. Dr. Horozoğlu stated that robotic surgery had been on the agenda for about 24 years with the emergence of artificial intelligence and continued as follows: “Developments in medicine continue at lightning speed. In the coming processes, situations will arise where remote surgeries can be performed and these devices can be used in various war environments. I think that there will be important developments when these developments come together with artificial intelligence. I wish the robotic surgery system to be auspicious for our region, our city, all our patients making use of our services in this region and our physicians who will use this surgical system.”

Underlining that the device was donated to the Medical Faculty Hospitals of our university by Demiryaka Holding and added: “Demiryaka Holding, together with the Senior Management of our university, Office of the Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Chief Physician’s Office enabled our university hospital to have this device. I would like to thank Demiryaka Holding for its contribution to our university.”
