Vaccination Not Only Protects Cancer Patients from Infections but Also Plays a Crucial Role in Improving Their Overall Health During Treatment
The Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialty Society of Türkiye (EKMUD) held a meeting at the A Hall of the ERU Health Application and Research Center to share the latest developments in the field of infectious diseases and bring together experts on the subject.
The opening speeches were delivered by Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Ulu Kılıç, a faculty member at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology/ERU Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Pullukçu, a faculty member at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology/ Faculty of Medicine, Ege University.
Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Ulu Kılıç, addressing the topic of vaccination in cancer patients, stated: “The health of adults is a crucial factor in determining the overall health of society. Vaccines are one of the most effective methods of protection against infectious diseases and are particularly important for adults as a health priority. Vaccination in adults plays a critical role in protecting personal health and contributing to the strengthening of community immunity.”
Emphasizing the importance of vaccination for cancer patients to protect them against infections and improve their overall health, Professor Ulu Kılıç said: “Vaccines can balance the effects of cancer treatment and support the patients’ immune system during the treatment process. However, the decision to vaccinate should always be made in consultation with a healthcare professional.”
She mentioned that health authorities have provided strong scientific data regarding the safety and effectiveness of vaccination for cancer patients and stated that cancer patients should consult healthcare professionals to get information about vaccination.
At the EKMUD Meeting, the topic of “Antimicrobial Prophylaxis and Immunization in Immunosuppressed Patients” was discussed, with the prevention of infections in immunocompromised patients, prevention strategies, and immunization approaches being evaluated by experts in light of scientific data.
