Robust Support from our University to Airstrips: Innovative Solution for Rapid Repair after Bombardment

After years of R&D studies, the transportation team consisting of Asst. Prof. Şevket Aslan, a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering/ERU Faculty of Engineering, and his students has developed a cold asphalt-based repair material called ‘SkyPatch’, which allows rapid repair of damages that may occur after bombardment at the Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, and national airstrips.

Asst. Prof. Şevket Aslan said that the rapid development of air technologies in our country in recent years has led to a significant transformation and progress in the field of aviation.

He stated that the strategic importance of air bases increased even more and said: “These developments have caused new security and operational risks. The need for runways for aircraft to take off and land makes these areas vulnerable to attack. If an airbase runway is damaged, it may not be possible for aircraft to land or take off safely in an emergency. This can seriously jeopardize operational effectiveness. As a team acting with these concerns, we have developed an innovative solution that eliminates the shortcomings of existing materials after long-term and intensive laboratory studies. SkyPatch, which can be used on both concrete and asphalt runways, is elastically compatible, cold-laid, does not require compression, hardens in ten minutes, has high strength, is resistant to expansion and contraction, is long-lasting and environmentally friendly. We would like to express our gratitude to Erciyes University, which constantly contributes to the progress of our country in the field of science and technology, Erciyes Technopark, which provides support in infrastructure and facilities, KOSGEB, which plays an essential role in supporting R&D activities, and all other stakeholders who contributed to the implementation of our project.”
