Event on the Occasion of the World Diabetes Day

A festival for children with diabetes was organized by the Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes team as part of the World Diabetes Day at the ERU Faculty of Medicine Children’s Hospital.

Assoc. Prof. Ülkü Gül Şiraz, a faculty member at the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology, said: “Thanks to this event, we aimed to draw attention to diabetes, increase awareness on diabetes in the society and make the children with diabetes and their families feel that we are always with them.”

She also mentioned that diabetes has become an increasing health problem, especially in the pediatric age group, and said: “Symptoms of diabetes in children include frequent urination, excessive thirst, rapid weight loss and fatigue. It is critical for children with these symptoms to consult a specialist for early diagnosis and treatment. Regular follow-up of diabetes plays a major role in protecting the children from long-term complications.”

She continued as follows: “As Erciyes University Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic, we conduct the follow-up and treatment of the children with diabetes with a multidisciplinary team approach. In addition to our physicians, our expert staff consisting of diabetes nurses, dieticians and psychologists provide comprehensive support for the children to lead a healthy life both physically and psychologically. The happiness on the faces of the children with diabetes is the greatest source of motivation for us. On the occasion of this special day, we would like to inform you that we will continue to work to increase awareness on diabetes in the society and to stand by the children with diabetes as much as we can. The children had pleasant moments with the gifts distributed, coloring activities, illusion shows and various competitions. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Mustafa Yalçın, Mayor of Talas, the students of the Department of Pediatric Nursing/Faculty of Health Sciences and the benefactors who supported the festival.”
